1. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The MCAT is computerized, and offered on 23 different dates between January 25th and September 13th. For information, see www.aamc.org/students/mcat/start.htm.
2. Application Meeting. Beginning in February, 2008, you can call 864-3500 to schedule an application meeting with Paul Crosby. As part of this meeting, you'll start a file for evaluation letters, www.medadvising.ku.edu/letters.shtml.
3. American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Most medical schools, including the KU School of Medicine, require candidates to first apply through AMCAS. ~May 14th, you'll be able to start an application at www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm, and AMCAS will begin accepting applications ~June 4th.
If you're applying early decision, the deadline for your AMCAS application is August 1st, and July 1st is encouraged. If you're applying regular decision, the deadline for the KU School of Medicine is October 15th, and September 1st is encouraged.
For Texas public medical schools, you first apply through TMDSAS at www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas.
For most osteopathic (D.O.) medical schools, you first apply through AACOMAS at https://aacomas.aacom.org.
You can find information about allopathic medical schools in the AAMC's Medical School Admission Requirements guide on reserve in the Anschutz Science Library, and osteopathic medical schools online at www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Pages/default.aspx.
After you finish a draft of your essay, you can call 864-3500 to schedule a review and ask questions about the application.
4. Supplemental Applications. The KU School of Medicine's early decision deadline for all supplemental application materials, including evaluation letters, will be in late August. Most medical schools encourage regular decision applicants to complete their supplemental within two weeks of receiving the application.
5. Evaluation Letters. Your writers will send their letters to the University Career Center. If you plan to apply for early decision, give them an August 1st deadline; If you plan to apply for regular decision, give them a September 1st deadline. Check with Charlotte Leonard, 110 Burge Union, (785) 864-7680, cleonard@ku.edu, to make sure all of your letters arrive.
When your letter file is complete, pay Charlotte $35 and complete a Request to Send Form to have your letters posted on VirtualEvals. If applying early decision to the KU School of Medicine, your letters need to arrive at the medical school by late August. For more information, see www.medadvising.ku.edu/letters.shtml.
6. Interviews. The KU School of Medicine will hold early decision interviews in September, and regular decision interviews from October through February. For more information, see www.medadvising.ku.edu/interviews.shtml.
